The Scheepsvaarthuis (Shipping House) in Amsterdam is an icon of the Amsterdam School of architecture and a well-known landmark in the city. Built between 1913 and 1928, the architectural brief called for grandeur with ‘a certain exuberance in the decoration’, something it achieves with elegant vertical lines, tall windows and a low-angled roof. It’s hard not to be inspired by a building this elegant.
